How to Stay Sober for 31 Days: A Dry January Cheat Sheet

How to Stay Sober for 31 Days: A Dry January Cheat Sheet

Happy New Year and an extra special Happy Dry January to all those celebrating!!!

It's the best month of the year in our book - time for a fresh start on personal health plans, new goals, career advancements, and getting the best out of life.

If that includes kicking the booze for a clear-headed month of January, we've got the perfect list for you to stay successful all month long.

New Year, Best You, Boo!

1. Stocking Up on Alternatives

Like, NOW! Having non-alcoholic bevs on hand before the cravings and the peer pressure hit is essential. Find killer AF sales and fill that fridge with delicious, hangover-free drinks!

1. BYONA

Bring your own NA drinks wherever you go! Many folks who quit drinking (temporarily or permenantly) will say having a drink in their hand at all times is the best way for them to not feel the need for a *different* kind of drink in their hand.

When you're out socializing or with you drinking buddies, it can just be a long-time habit to guzzle down whatever is in your cup. Make sure it's something bubbly you won't regret tomorrow!

3. "Play the Tape Forward"

This phrase means to think that first drink all the way through. If you're feeling tempted to "just have one" or "moderate" for the evening, try to think realistically about what will happen if you do have that one drink.

Will you not stop until 5 drinks? Might you do something you regret? Even if you don't overdrink, will you be disappointed in not sticking to your goal when you wake up tomorrow? Think it through!

4. Have Your Cheerleaders on Speed Dial

Support is crucial and community is key! Even if it's just for 31 days in Dry January, it's important to have people on your side.

Whether they are teammates joining in on the challenge, or cheerleaders who support you in every single phase of life, make sure you have the right people on speed dial for those dicey moments.

If you don't feel you have anyone IRL to call, you can lean on the online sober community for support with pages like No Booze Babes, Sober Mom Squad, Sober in Central Park, and Join Soberish.

5. Remember Your 'Why'

Think ahead. Think about your long-term goals (even if long-term just means 31 days from now). Remember your reason why! Why are you taking this break in the first place? What's the big picture?

6. Journal About It

And then write it down! It might seem simple and obvious like, why wouldn't anyone take a break from drinking? Because it's good for us!

But writing down why YOU are doing it can really make it stick in your head and keep you focused on your personal goals. So when that sneaky inner voice comes around trying to convince you to take a drink, it will be an easy no from us, dawg.

How to Stay Sober This Dry January

7. Make it Fun!

Try new drinks, make a delicious mocktail, or embrace an adventurous new hobby. No activity requires you to drink alcohol (other than drinking alcohol). There are endless opportunities for fun this month!

8. Treat Yo' Self!

Find yourself an alternative treat this Dry January (BTW, alcohol is all tricks and no treat - don't fall for it this month).

Hot cocoa, massage, new slippers, a weekend getaway. Take that booze-spending money and invest it elsewhere this month on something that will make you happy today, with no regrets tomorrow.

9. Count Your Days

Counting your days can be an awesome way to celebrate your progress through Dry January. You will have so much pride when you see the minutes, hours, and days you've spent as a booze-free badass!

Try using an app like I Am Sober or Your Sober Buddy to plug in your "dry" date and let those numbers pile high!

10. Celebrate The Little Things

Don't be afraid to pat yourself on the back every single day! Celebrate your first sober outing or your first week at work without drinking at the end of the day.

Actively choosing different coping mechanisms and activities that don't involve booze can be tough work and each moment deserves to be celebrated.

Whether you make it a few days, two weeks, or only have a couple slips during the month, we think it's still worth celerbating yourself reevaluating your relationship with alcohol. We can only go up from here!

You Might Like It!

It might surprise you (or maybe it won't), but you might enjoy not drinking and all the beautiful benefits that come with it!

You won't know unless you give it a go. Stay smooth sippin' all month long with our creamy Mocha Nitro Stout or the full-bodied Dry Red Blend.

Here's to a hangover free January and a bright and bubbly new year!
