Love beer but can’t handle the high gluten content of most brews? Here’s everything you need to know about gluten free beer, including how it’s made, why it’s better, and where you can find the best options.

All beer is different, particularly when it comes to craft options like the Grüvi IPA. However, every great beer starts with the same basic recipe — water, hops, yeast, and a starch, like barley or wheat, which is where the gluten normally comes from.

Filtered water is important, as it gives a beer the purest flavor. At GrĂĽvi, we only use filtered spring water for all of our bevs, which creates a clean foundation for the rest of the goodness that gets added next.

A true brew also relies on yeast and starch to ferment properly. While non-alcoholic beer is often made without any fermentation in order to avoid alcoholization, we lager our Golden for 6 weeks.

This allows the yeast to create a full-bodied flavor while staying below the 0.5% ABV threshold. Many other NA brands skip this step and use flavor additives to mimic the flavors of fermentation (aka fake beer.)

Gluten-Free Non-Alcoholic Beer Should Taste Like Beer

Because starch is a necessary component of the fermentation process, it is challenging to create a gluten-free beer that still tastes like the real deal. But impossible it is not!

While there are some brews out there that contain zero gluten from start to finish, many of the best tasting options are “gluten reduced,” meaning they contain minimal gluten (a small enough amount to fall under the celiac threshold.)

By using a very small amount of a glutenous ingredient like barley, these beers can ferment properly without causing digestive problems for people with Celiac or gluten allergies. And when you keep the process as authentic as possible, you can create craft beers that are bloat-resistant and totally delicious! *chef’s kiss*
